The Carmel Mission is one of the oldest Spanish Missions in California and was founded in 1770 by Father Juniper Serra who is buried on the site. The Carmel Mission has been designated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. The Carmel Mission is an active Roman Catholic Church holding masses on a daily basis. The Mission also hosts weddings, art and cultural events and numerous other community events. The Carmel Mission also serves as a museum preserving and displaying it cultural past and that of the area.
