The Central Coast Highway is usually thought of as the stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel and Cambria often called the Big Sur Highway. It is really not important where Highway 1 begins or ends. More than anything the Pacific Coast Highway is a state of mind. The most dramatic scenery begins south of Carmel where PCH hugs the rugged California Central Coast producing some of the most awe inspiring views in the world. With the Pacific Ocean crashing below a road trip down Highway One is one of the best drives in America. If you are looking for breathtaking scenery you will find yourself stopping to peer over the cliffs to discover what a trip down PCH has to offer. Most of the beaches below are inaccessible, which adds to the beauty. Thirty miles south of Carmel you will find Big Sur tucked in amongst the Redwoods. A town with its own unique vibe you will enjoy the shopping, dining and views. This section of Highway One or Big Sur Highway has the designation of a National Scenic Byway.
